We have been critical of the high school cheerleaders in the past, with numerous posts complaining that the girls were doing too many suggestive dances rather than cheering for the team.
In Wednesday's GV, there was a letter to the editor praising the new cheer coaches for their hard work, their time commitment to the squad and the energy they have exerted to make this year's squad such a good thing.
Both coaches' names were new to me, so I am guessing they are new to the squad.
If they have these young women doing cheers instead of hoochie-mama dances that embarrass the adults in the stands, then they get a big hoorah from me, too.
Have any of you guys noticed a difference? _________________ Blessed are they who can give without remembering and take without forgetting

I have heard that the cheer squad will be returning to cheering instead of hoochie dancing. I hope it is true.

I haven't seen them in action, but my 4 year old son was really impressed with their stunts. He liked that way more than the football game! _________________ "Establishing healthy behaviors during childhood is easier and more effective than trying to change unhealthy behaviors during adulthood." -www.thelunchbox.org

My husband took our kids to the game last Friday night and said that the cheerleaders were actually doing cheers and chants, and that our 4 year old daughter was mesmerized by them. They must have been doing something right because she came home from the game imitating cheers instead of pole dances!

No, you silly man!
I wonder what brought about this change.
Then again, I really don't care. It sounds like some of the moms (of the cheerleaders) are happy enough with the current situation to write a public letter backing the coaches and applauding the team. I've not seen that done in the last few years, if ever.
Congratulations to the two new (?) coaches...congratulations on a return to what cheerleading is supposed to be. _________________ Blessed are they who can give without remembering and take without forgetting

They put on a very nice show at the game Fri. night. What a noticeable difference in the cheers. Yes they were doing stunts constantly. They had the mat in front of them and were doing gymnastics/tumbling moves as well. I was very impressed - not a pole dance move in sight!

I hope they continue with these improvements. I'd hate for something to get in the way of or distract them from their progress. I've not heard (or seen) such good things about the cheerleaders in a long time.
As a Comet4Life, I'm proud of the new look. And the addition of the mascot seems to be a positive and popular thing, as well. That brave soul, Jacob, deserves some praise.

I saw the picture in the paper.
"Brave soul" is absolutely right. _________________ Quid custodit ipsos custodes?

He is a man's man, dt. And, along with brave...wise. He's surrounded by cutie cheerleaders; what better place to be as a HS boy. _________________ "Make it so!" Cpt. Jean-Luc Picard

I didn't mean to leave Jacob out. He too put on a heck of a show and looked like he was melting (it was so hot for him) the whole time. He was covered from neck to toe.

I am a cheerleader parent, and I wanted to thank-you for all of the supportive comments on here about the letter to the newspapers. We are very proud of how our girls are appropriatly supporting the football team, and are not doing provocative moves out there. They are back to doing what they are supposed to do-cheer! Our coaches are awesome and we love what they are doing to bring cheering back to a wholesome sport. I would like to ask if you attend any of the games, that (although you are there to watch the game) if the girls do any cheers with a time for the crowd to respond, please help them out. One girl told me last week that when they did "I say blue you say white" and we responded that it is the best feeling to hear the crowd cheering back with them. At the Rustburg game, when we were yelling let's go Comets, several of the football players turned around and were gesturing for us to yell louder and keep it up. They love the support from the fans, and I think it boosts their moral for the games. So, if you attend a Comet game, support those young men out there on the field or sidelines. Make some noise and show your Comet pride! Help those cheerleaders when they do a cheer or chant that you can participate in. They all love the support!

Please, tell your daughter they are doing a great job...they are cheering well and leading the crowd in good cheers, bravo.
Also, please tell the coaches thank you for making the team what they are supposed to be, instead having of a group audition for strip club pole dancers. _________________ “Among natural rights are these: first, a right to life; secondly, to liberty; thirdly to property; together with the right to support and defend them in the best manner they can.” ---> Samuel Adams |
