| The main hang-up seems to be the budget part. Some of the members of the school board were concerned that we are adding a program that will cost some money and we are getting squeezed by the BOS for money. My take is we need the class and it is good for all the children. The cost is not as high as some make out in that sometimes teachers can be switched around. If many come to the March School Board meeting and voice their support for the class it will be fine. The public discussion on the class is at 7 just before our regular Board mee6ting. By the way it is a CL class. |

I feel this sort of class would be very valuable. I continue to be shocked by young people who have NO EARTHLY IDEA how to "make change" without the benefit of a computer or register, calculator to tell them the amount. OR hopw to keep a checking account in balance...and even if you do not write paper checks and use debit , bank online....you still need to have THE CONCEPT.
I also hear that the teaching of multiplication tables is being phased out, as the teaching of cursive writing, much like phonics seems to have disappeared. Kids are going to lack the CONCEPTS in the brain that , I still use on a daily basis, even though I love my calculators and computers, and being able to WRITE on the computer. But there is still something very special about putting pen to paper and writing in one's own hand. I fear the current generations will not HAVE A "hand". _________________ Never ask for permission....beg for forgiveness.

I was at Longwood today with my son. During a panel discussion several current Longwood students as well as one from JMU were discussing what were some of the major things they had to adjust to making the transition from high school to college.
Each one stated that one of the most important things were personal finance issues. They questioned who knew how to balance a check book, how to responsibly use credit/debit cards and handle their personal finances etc, only 2 raised their hands (not mine ) His personal finance needs are still handled by the First Bank of Mom & Pop.
Each student told the audience that lessons they learned about personal finance was something that helped in the transition process. They stated personal experiences that arose once on campus and how these lessons helped them. _________________ There are four basic food groups: milk chocolate, dark chocolate, white chocolate, and chocolate truffles. ~~ Anonymous |
