ANOTHER closed day tomorrow for HCPS???

REALLY, this is getting to be slightly ridiculous....It snowed last SATURDAY, and schools are still going to be closed all day on Thursday?! What, does HCPS want parents to get fired from their jobs and up the unemployment rate in the county because they have to stay home with their kids...? Between this, and the four day weekend last week for MLK, Jr / Lee & Jackson, that's six days or partial days off of work for some parents within a months' space of time...and NOT all employers are as understanding as others.

Have you been out on many back roads around here lately, especially in the northern part of the county?

where are the plows, then? FOUR DAYS, not including Sunday....if we know the back roads are an issue, then the back roads should be a priority. Alternately, other arrangements should be made for those kids living in such areas to catch a bus elsewhere on a safer road.

And yes, I was on back roads. I even got stuck on one and had to be rescued on Monday...I had to go to work. No snow days for us...

And also, back roads or no back roads, there are still parents who could lose their jobs for this.

Personally, I'm glad to see the school system putting the safety of the kids over the convenience of the parents, if the roads are bad enough to justify it.

Now, if they are stretching these snow days so they can start again before Labor Day......

I think it is ridiculous. Is there anywhere else that hasn't resumed business as normal?

I didn't mean schools. I mean businesses, stores, offices, etc.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this is just silly. I understood Monday. I could even get behind Tuesday. Today, and certainly tomorrow, seems a little on the ridiculous side, and I don't buy that it is solely for the safety of the students. Everyone else in town is managing to get to and from everywhere else in town just fine...at this point it is a hassle, but again - after four days, the roads should be more or less clear countywide, and if they aren't, that's a bigger, administrative/VDOT problem - and not one the parents should have to bear the brunt of.

I'm sorry, but the schools are not your babysitter. If they had opened school Tuesday, and a bus wrecked on a backroad that was icy, the yelling would still be going on.

Better safe than sorry.

I am responsible for the lives of my children.
I have been on the backroads, by myself so I can only injure myself.
As long as there are trees, there are shaded areas where the snow and ice is still a bitch and will continue to be until temperatures warm to melt those shaded areas.
Combine that with overnight refreezing and I can understand the reluctance of central office to open schools on Thursday.
Not enough snow falls in this area to provide the practice and experience necessary to drive on snow/ice.
All it takes is a few hours close to a scanner to understand how inept people in this area are when it comes to driving on snow.
Testosterone, four wheel drive and snow are a deadly combination in this area.
If my children had to ride the school bus to school either today, or tomorrow, I would make arrangements to get them there.
The school bus drivers are skilled and more than competent to handle normal roads, but I would not want to be entrusted with the lives of dozens of school children while negotiating the back roads when the roads are in the condition they are currently in.
As far as VDOT is concerned, back roads are pushed to passable status.
You made it to work, then they were passable.
Would you want you children on those same roads, riding a school bus?
After all this, I will admit to riding my bicycle on these roads during the snow on Saturday. I also hit the road Sunday afternoon for a few miles and I road to work on Monday.
But I did it solo, without my children. My decision.
Onward thru the fog

With a county-wide school system, and a county as large as ours, this is just gonna happen. It has been known to snow in Volens early in the morning, and not a flake falls elsewhere, and they close schools.

They have to be concerned about all the kids, and all the roads in the entire county.

Getting schools reopened is not VDOT's primary concern.

I feel your pain, but this is a huge county and all the kids are on the same bus system. Their safety is paramount.

Perhaps you are on to something there..

But I do agree that the school system is making the right calls......back roads are still not safely passable for buses at the time of morning commutes....passabe for cars does not necessaily mean passable for buses.

Now, if the side benefit of starting before labor day is acheived in the abundance of caution, well then...OK.
