I think it's because of the highly effective corporate lobbying efforts (money) that control the legislation around food safety here. Sorry to be hauling politics here to Health-Related Issues, but I'm sad to say that the two seem to be entwined.

No problem - it definitely is a political subject!

Our gov't has poorer regulations and our businesses have slacker standards...not a good combo, IMHO.
